How to Find Your Dream Designer
- See the sights! Study design stories in local newspapers and magazines. Tour display homes. Ask friends for referrals. Find out who is responsible for work you admire.
- Make a call. Ask how the designer is paid. Flat fee? Hourly? Is there a charge for research? Will the designer work with your existing furniture? Will he or she commit to a budget and schedule? What about credentials and references?
- Request a visit to your home. About one hour later, the designer should share a general plan based on good design principles. Your home is an extension of your taste - not the designer’s. It is a good sign if the designer delves into your likes and dislikes. It is not a good sign if he or she comes across as preachy. Ask yourself, “Am I compatible with the designer?”
- Schedule a presentation. Meet at the studio (where the set-up allows for the simultaneous viewing of alternative ideas) and see what the designer has created for you. Share your reactions.
- Its a match! If you've chosen well, welcome to the beginning of a wonderful experience and potentially, a rewarding long-term relationship.
